Reading behavior
by Amal and Khawla
Introduction:-
Technology has improved
during the time, now a days it become more powerful than before, it is controlling
our time and our life, so a lot of people prefer to spend their time on games,
chatting and social media rather than spend it on reading books, so we were
curies to know if they love to read, what is their reading behavior??, are they
think that books are a variable thing?? Is it deserved to spend their leisure
time on reading??
Research plan:-
First of all we start to set up our research
plan, and decide who our target is, or who we are going to ask, when we will
ask them and where? Finally how we can reach them??
Who:
Dubai women college morning students, a sample of 10 students in each
year (foundations student’s / first year students/ second year students/ third
year students/ fourth year students).
When:
After spring break we are going
to collect the data from all of the students and it will be during week 7 and
8.
Where:
At the DWC campus.
How:
By sending them an online survey via survey monkey.
Data Collection:-
As we know to reach some person or group of the people we need
to think how this person will love to answer us, or how we can accesses this
group, we recognize that printing our survey and distribute it is a bad idea,
because it will take a lot of time and it’s not a sustainable act also we will
find a lot difficulty to analysis, so We used survey monkey to collect our data
because it is an easy way to reach people which is through a website link
rather than papers distributed by hands .
First of all, we started
setting up our questions and made some changes in the survey. After that, we
sent the link to our friends in HCT by emails but we didn't receive enough
responses, so we decided to send it through BBM and broadcast the link to our
friends in HCT. Finally we got more than 50 responses.
Instruments:
We ask them 10
question, 6 of them were multiple choice, and 4 of them where text answer,
these questions help us to know more about their reading behavior , and how
they think about the books After
collecting our data we and analysis it we get an answer for our research
question.

Data Analysis:
The graph shows four
options, Novel, scientific, love stories and others it is evident from the
chart that novel scored the highest percentage nearly 40%, with small
difference between it and love stories that got nearly 38%
In this chart, we can
indicate that 46% of
the students read monthly and nearly 9%of them read daily.
· -After analyzing
each respond we indicate that, who read love stories or scientific
books they often read them on a
month , and who love to read novels they often read them once a week.
|
For most of students the period of finishing one book equally between “A week” and “A
month” with a percentage of 35%.
As we can see in this chart, the majority of students were reading at
their homes, so the percentage of reading at home was fare away from the
others, with a same percentage of 4% for reading in each of work, library and
other places.
·
After analyzing the data we realized that nearly all of
the students who read love stories finished it on one month, but who read
novels and scientific books, we got an equal percentage of finishing it on
a week or one month, and finally almost all the students loved to read at
home.
|
The favorite language to read for the students is Arabic (65%)
and the second one is English (30%), with no responses for French.
Half of the students stop reading during the semester with different
responses for the others.
·
Based on the analysis, who read novels or love stories
always prefer to read it on Arabic on the other hand who read scientific
books they prefer English language , finally nearly all of them stop
reading during the semester.

Why do you read?
We receive
different answers for this question, most of students answered that, they are
reading for having fun, spending time, and to increase their knowledge.
Do you like to read about
factually or non-factually? Why?
Nearly 50% of students say that they love to
read about factually, because they want to know more about the real life and
what is happening in it , the others answered that they love them both because
the first one increase their knowledge and the second one make them get
rid of tension and life stresses.
Do you believe that books are the best way to exercise your mind? Why?
Almost every one said “yes” but with
different reasons, some of them believe that books improve our imagination and
the way we think, and some of them said that books provide us with new
information and make us ask for more. On the other hand, a few of them disagree because they
believe that there are several ways that could help us to increase our
knowledge better than the books such
as real life experiences.
What is your advice for
those who don’t read?
Each one of them had different ideas
and advices, but the most advice that was repeated is “reading will
improving your knowledge”.
Conclusion:-
Finally we
learned that there are some students that actually reading books and are
interested to spending their time on reading; also we improve our skills by
learning how to create an online survey.
At the end
each one of us should start reading because books are like a time machine,
takes us everywhere on any time, it takes us around the world and centuries, so
